I get this question more than any other question, so I thought it would be appropriate to start our new newsletter with this one. The answer could be debated but this is my view on submissions.

The first thing you should find out before concentrating on submission is whether or not you're already in that specific search engine. The way to find out if you're in the search engines data_base_ is to do a search for yourdomainname.com as the search phrase. If you're listed, there is no need to submit to that engine.

For new web sites you really only need to submit once, however there are some that believe you should submit multiple times. In reality this is untrue, but if you feel you must submit multiple times, never submit more than once a month. This is more than sufficient and anymore than that could get you in trouble with the engines.

No matter what you do, make sure you do a little research on the search engines that you are interested in before starting any submission campaign. You might find that you could be wasting time and energy when you could be focusing on other more important areas of web site promotion.
