All the myths about web hosting seem to be there mainly to help lousy web hosts jack up prices without giving you much in return. Here are 10 web hosting myths that just plain don’t hold up.
Unlimited Hosting?! WHAT A DEAL!
Okay, check your C drive. Is it full? Chances are it’s not. Storage space isn’t exactly pure gold in this day and age. You can store an entire website on a microscopic piece of disc space, so why wouldn’t you expect unlimited hosting from someone you are paying money to? Unlimited hosting is a given, not a feature.
Windows Computer? Get a Windows Host!
Truth is, it doesn’t really matter what operating system you are using. Choosing a windows based web host is more of a personal preference thing than a necessity.
I’ll Just Host on My Own Computer for Free!
Yeah this is technically true, but not that great an idea. Do you really want to leave your computer running 24/7? Running a server is a full time job, which is why these people do it professionally. Self-hosting is a bigger headache than it’s worth to save three or four bucks a month.
All Web Hosts Own Their Own Data Centers
Actually, most web hosts rent servers. Their main purpose is to serve as kind of an “agency”, connecting you to web servers and giving you a way to easily access them.
Flawless, 24/7 Hosting is Possible
Nope. Even the most reliable server at least goes down for basic maintenance now and then, so don’t expect your website to stay up literally “forever”.
Free Web Hosts are Just as Good!
Just as good as what? Bad web hosts? Sure. What you get for free isn’t a bad deal, but when you pay for a site, you get domain registration, you get to select your own advertisers and collect the revenue yourself and you get a lot more freedom and control over the site.
Web Sites Require True Geeks to Maintain
If this is true, then why are there so many websites out there written from the point of view of the webmaster’s cat? Anyone can run a web site… Unfortunately.
Negative Host Reviews
Okay, a lot of website reviewers are on the up and up. However, there are sites that get overwhelmingly bad reviews because a competitor commissioned some negative reviews. Look at the facts cited in a review and go on that, but remember that even a totally honest reviewer is only stating his opinion.
Phone Support is a Must!
A lot of web hosts only offer customer support online. This isn’t, actually, a bad thing. If your site uses advanced features, that’s one thing, but the vast majority of technical issues can be addressed in email or messenger.
